Countdown to Montréal: A red, white and blue HABit

I’ll be the first to admit it. I had no idea just how massive the fan base was for the Montréal Canadiens, affectionately referred to as The Habs (short for Les Habitants).

However, upon learning the Canadiens are the most popular NHL team with widespread support, I immediately got it. Being from Saskatchewan, home to the Roughriders and Rider Nation (who sport watermelon helmets!) Habs fans are loud, proud and far ranging.

Really, what’s not to love about the most winning NHL team of all time?

“They share that rare combination of history and success, having begun in 1909 and won 24 Stanley Cups,” says a friend and longtime Canadiens fan. If that’s not enough, they are the longest continuously operating professional ice hockey team in the world, even predating the NHL, and the only one to win 5 Stanley cups in a row (1956-60).

Since 1914, the Canadiens uniforms have combined colours red, white and blue and have been worn by NHL hockey legends Howie Morenz, Maurice “Rocket” Richard and Guy Lafleur, to name a few.
